One of the most interesting things I experienced in Pollachi was watching a traditional cockfight (சேவல் போர்). The cockfight became quite popular after the Tamil movie Aadukalam. Ever since I watched the movie, I wanted to experience a live fight. Luckily, I got the chance when I visited Pollachi with my family. My uncle took me to watch a real cockfight, and it was an unforgettable experience!
I even got to meet some of the biggest and strongest cocks that were bred and trained specifically for these fights. These birds were majestic and well taken care of. The trainers feed them a special diet and train them meticulously to prepare for fights. It’s fascinating how experienced trainers can understand the body language of the cocks and predict their chances of winning.
Before every fight, there’s a lot of excitement and anticipation in the air. People closely observe the birds, guessing which one might win. The energy around the fight was thrilling and intense, unlike anything I had ever experienced before.
Watching the live fight made me appreciate how much effort goes into training these birds. The coordination between the trainer and the cock is almost like that of an athlete and a coach. Every move is calculated, and the tension builds as the fight progresses.
Words cannot fully express the experience—it was simply thrilling, adventurous, and very different! It’s one thing to watch it on screen, but witnessing it live gave me a new perspective on this traditional sport.
